The Man Behind Almeida: Carlos Bernard

The role of Tony Almeida is played subtley and brilliantly by Carlos Bernard, who brings the perfect blend of confrontationalism, intelligence, passion, depth and conflict to the character of this no-nonsense but truly loyal and patriotic agent.

24 is the jewel in the crown of Carlos Bernard's career up to this point, and will likely remain the defining role of his career. His previous work consists mostly of small roles in feature films, guest spots on b-list television series and two recurring roles on the daytime soaps. Luckily for fans of 24, the directors and producers recognized his immense talent and ability to do so much more with a juicy, three-dimensional role in a groundbreaking, innovative and character-driven series. He is in excellent company with the likes of Kiefer Sutherland, Xander Berkeley and Dennis Haysbert, and he definitely holds his own. He has brought a unique internal struggle and acute depth to a character that could easily have been played as far more one-dimensional by a lesser actor.

Born Carlos Bernard Papierski on October 12, 1966 (this makes him a Libra) in Evanston Illinois near Chicago, Carlos is the youngest of three children. Carlos grew up and attended high school in Illinois and graduated from Illinois State University (Normal). He began his acting career on live stage in Chicago with the Pegasus Players (which may explain why Tony uses a Chicago Cubs coffee mug), starring in a number of shows. He was also a founding member of the Ashbury Actors Group. He then moved to San Francisco and as mentioned above, worked in small roles in several feature films and in television. Carlos has a Fine Arts degree from the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco.

More from ESPNRadio.com. An 11 minute interview at about the midpoint of s3, just after the Golden Globe win.
